Experiential Learning

Capital uses high-impact practices like internships, immersion courses, pre-professional activities, and capstone projects proven to optimize student learning. Previous projects include the Zombie Apocalypse and Alien Invasion events which allowed students across a range of majors, including public relations, to get realistic experience dealing with a crisis situation. The event-planning course has a history of putting on a formal dance for adults with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the Public Relations client-based immersion class most recently partnered with award-winning integrated communications firm Fahlgren Mortine to take on the challenges of several worthy nonprofit organizations.

With a dedicated focus on hands-on education, the Public Relations major at Capital prepares students for a career in today’s digital media world. Public Relations focuses on the management of organizational relationships. Students are prepared to be professional communicators through their degree-specific courses and liberal arts background. Capital’s location in Columbus, a major metropolitan area, gives students an opportunity to apply their knowledge and hone their skills at Fortune 100 companies, small businesses, Public Relations firms, and educational and nonprofit organizations.

PRSSA

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the foremost organization for students interested in public relations and communications. Capital has its own chapter which meets frequently to learn from and network with public relations professionals and help local businesses and organizations solve public relations problems. Student leaders have been able to attend national, regional, and local conferences for public relations students and professionals. Recently, Capital PRSSA has received multiple awards including the Outstanding Graduate PRism Award from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Central Ohio Chapter.
